The ganivelle, also known as the "Girondine barrier", is a fence formed by assembling wooden slats. Usually made of chestnut, sometimes hazel or even acacia, it is made up of vertical slats cut to a point on one side. These slats are separated by a space whose width determines the "permeability" of the barrier. The slats are then assembled by twisting an iron wire. The slats are either sawn or split, depending on the type.
